The History of the Bailey Award

The Author; Gary R. List

When Alton E. Bailey died tragically at the age of 46 in May 1953, it was felt that his accomplishments should be honored in some way. In 1954, the North Central Section of AOCS was formed, and in 1958 it announced the establishment of an achievement award in his memory.

In 1959 the first Alton E. Bailey medal was presented to Virgil C. Mehlenbacher (AOCS president, 1949), an early pioneer in analytical methods development for the fats and oils industry. Other early Bailey Award winners include Ralph Potts, the father of the oleochemical industry and Professor T.P. Hilditch, an early pioneer in triglyceride composition and structure work. Since then, the award has been made annually to eminent scientists from many countries "to recognize outstanding research and exceptional service in the field of lipids and associated products."
