Combined Extraction-Esterification of Fatty Acids


Everyone likes a shortcut, so successful extraction of lipids with simultaneous transesterification is an attractive idea. Many methods have been described in the literature. However, I would like to add one caveat. Most extraction methods have a washing step that gets rid of many potential contaminants; eliminating this step can give rise to artefact peaks on gas chromatography traces. The following references, covering the years 1990 to the present, were collected as part of our regular literature reviews for our own research purposes. We cannot claim to have covered the subject exhaustively, but we have done our best.
